Overview

The Mpox mRNA vaccine is an investigational vaccine candidate being developed by Afrigen Biologics. It is one of the flagship programs within the WHO-supported mRNA technology transfer hub initiative, which aims to build vaccine manufacturing capacity in low- and middle-income countries. The vaccine utilizes messenger RNA (mRNA) technology to encode specific antigens from the Mpox virus (an orthopoxvirus). Upon administration, the mRNA instructs host cells to produce these viral antigens, which then stimulate the immune system to generate protective antibodies and T-cell responses against the virus. This program is part of a broader effort to address global health security and ensure equitable access to vaccines for emerging infectious diseases.
