mRNA-1045 and mRNA-1230 are two distinct investigational mRNA-based combination vaccine candidates developed by Moderna to provide consolidated protection against major seasonal respiratory viruses. mRNA-1045 is a bivalent vaccine candidate targeting seasonal influenza (incorporating quadrivalent influenza antigens) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). mRNA-1230 is a trivalent vaccine candidate that expands this coverage to include SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Both vaccines utilize Moderna's proprietary lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology to deliver mRNA sequences encoding viral surface proteins—specifically hemagglutinin for influenza, the prefusion F protein for RSV, and the spike protein for SARS-CoV-2—to elicit robust humoral and cellular immune responses. These candidates are currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials, primarily focusing on safety and immunogenicity in older adults (aged 50-75 years) to streamline immunization schedules for respiratory pathogens.
