mRNA-1975 + mRNA-1982 is an investigational combination of two mRNA-based vaccines developed by Moderna for the prevention of Lyme disease. The vaccines utilize messenger RNA encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles to encode the outer surface protein A (OspA) antigens of *Borrelia* bacteria. mRNA-1982 is a monovalent vaccine targeting serotype 1 (*Borrelia burgdorferi*), while mRNA-1975 is a heptavalent vaccine covering serotypes 1 through 7, providing broad protection against the major *Borrelia* species prevalent in North America and Europe. The mechanism of action is unique as a transmission-blocking vaccine; antibodies generated in the human host are ingested by the tick during a blood meal, where they kill the *Borrelia* pathogens in the tick's midgut before they can migrate to the salivary glands and infect the human. The combination is currently in Phase I/II clinical development (NCT05975099).
