Overview

The mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (S-protein chimera) is an mRNA-based vaccine designed to combat SARS-CoV-2 variants. It utilizes a chimeric spike (S) protein design, incorporating genetic material from different sarbecoviruses or SARS-CoV-2 variants to elicit a broad immune response. The vaccine delivers messenger RNA (mRNA) into human cells, instructing them to produce these chimeric spike proteins. These proteins then act as antigens, prompting the immune system to generate neutralizing antibodies and T-cells, thereby providing protection against future viral infection. This approach aims to offer broader protection against existing and emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Omicron. It is being developed by Walvax Biotechnology in collaboration with Fudan University and Shanghai Blue Lake Bio.
