mRNA-LNP (Wassermann Medic) is an investigational mRNA-based therapeutic formulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). Developed by Wassermann Medic in collaboration with Almirall, the therapy utilizes messenger RNA to encode specific therapeutic proteins that are expressed locally within the tumor microenvironment. These proteins are intended to exert an antineoplastic effect, potentially by inducing apoptosis in cancerous cells or modulating the local immune response to recognize and eliminate the tumor. The lipid nanoparticle delivery system is critical for protecting the mRNA from enzymatic degradation and facilitating its efficient entry into target skin cells. The program is currently in Phase 1 clinical development, representing a strategic expansion of Almirall's dermatology-focused pipeline into advanced genetic and RNA-based therapies.
