Overview

MSC-EV is an investigational cell-free biologic therapy consisting of extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Developed by the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University, it is currently being evaluated for the treatment of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), particularly in patients who have undergone liver transplantation. Unlike direct cell-based therapies, MSC-EVs utilize paracrine mechanisms to deliver therapeutic cargo, such as microRNAs and proteins, to target cells. This approach aims to repair damaged liver tissue, suppress pathological immune responses, and modulate inflammation without the risks of replication or microvascular embolism associated with live cell transplantation. The therapy is designed to be easily stored and administered as a cell-free alternative to traditional stem cell treatments.
