MTX-ATMPs (methotrexate-loaded autologous tumor cell-derived microparticles) is a personalized nanomedicine platform developed by researchers at Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. This biologic drug delivery system utilizes microparticles derived from a patient's own tumor cells to package and deliver the chemotherapeutic agent methotrexate. Administered via intrapleural infusion, the therapy is specifically designed to treat malignant pleural effusion (MPE), particularly in patients with lung cancer. MTX-ATMPs function through a dual mechanism: the microparticles act as targeted carriers that deliver methotrexate directly to tumor cells to induce apoptosis, while the biological components of the microparticles simultaneously activate the host's antitumor immune response. Clinical trials have demonstrated high objective response rates (76-90%) and a reduction in the systemic toxicity typically associated with conventional chemotherapy.
