Overview
This intervention is a combination of a multivitamin infusion (MVI) and Lactated Ringer's (LR) solution, specifically utilized as a color-matched placebo in clinical research conducted by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. In the SPARES (Pilot Study of Protection And Repair of Endothelial-glycocalyx in Sepsis) trial, this solution serves as the control arm against Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP). The multivitamins are added to the standard Lactated Ringer's crystalloid solution primarily to mimic the yellow tint of plasma, ensuring the maintenance of the double-blind study design. While Lactated Ringer's provides essential electrolytes and fluid resuscitation to maintain intravascular volume in septic patients, the multivitamin component provides various essential vitamins. The study aims to determine if FFP provides superior protection or repair of the endothelial glycocalyx compared to this standard-of-care crystalloid-based placebo.
