Overview

Mupirocin + chlorhexidine is a topical combination therapy used primarily for the decolonization and treatment of skin infections, especially those caused by *Staphylococcus aureus*, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA). Mupirocin is a naturally occurring antibiotic produced by *Pseudomonas fluorescens* that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by specifically and reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, leading to inhibition of protein and RNA synthesis. Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity; it disrupts microbial cell membranes through interaction with negatively charged phosphate groups on the cell surface, causing leakage of intracellular material and ultimately cell death. This combination is often used in clinical settings for infection control and prevention strategies such as MRSA decolonization[1][3][4][8].
