Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MVA85A + BCG is a prime-boost vaccination strategy for tuberculosis prevention. It combines the traditional Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccine with MVA85A, a viral vector vaccine developed at Oxford University. MVA85A consists of a modified vaccinia Ankara virus engineered to express the 85A antigen from *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*. \n\nThe strategy involves initial vaccination with BCG followed by a booster dose of MVA85A, designed to enhance cellular immunity against tuberculosis. While MVA85A induces robust antigen-specific CD4+ T cell responses and modest CD8+ T cell responses, multiple clinical trials have demonstrated that this combination, though safe, does not significantly reduce the risk of developing tuberculosis compared to BCG alone.
