Mycophenolate mofetil and azathioprine are immunosuppressive drugs that inhibit purine synthesis through different mechanisms. Mycophenolate mofetil is a prodrug of mycophenolic acid that inhibits inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase, depleting guanosine nucleotides in lymphocytes. Azathioprine converts to 6-mercaptopurine and inhibits purine nucleotide synthesis. This combination is used in treating various autoimmune conditions, interstitial lung disease, and preventing organ rejection after transplantation.
