N,O-didansyl-L-tyrosine is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid L-tyrosine in which both the amino group and the phenolic hydroxyl group are derivatized with dansyl (5-dimethylaminonaphthalene sulfonamide) groups. It is a fluorescent compound characterized by its naphthalene rings and sulfonamide linkages attached to the tyrosine backbone. This molecule has been used primarily as a biochemical probe or reagent due to its strong fluorescence properties. Notably, it acts as a potent and selective inhibitor of thymidylate synthase (TS), an enzyme critical for DNA synthesis; this inhibition has been demonstrated in bacterial species such as Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus casei. There are no approved therapeutic indications for this compound; it is considered experimental and mainly used in research settings for studying enzyme mechanisms or as a fluorescent label[3][9][1].
