n-(p-sulfamoylphenyl)-α-l-rhamnosylamine is a specific compound belonging to a series of N-(p-sulfamoylphenyl)-alpha-D-glycopyranosylamines. These compounds are investigated as carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors, particularly for their potential as topically acting antiglaucoma agents. The presence of sugar moieties in these molecules, such as rhamnosylamine, enhances their water solubility compared to other sulfonamides. In preclinical studies using hypertensive rabbits, some compounds from this series demonstrated strong and long-lasting intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering effects, proving more effective than clinically used antiglaucoma sulfonamides like dorzolamide and brinzolamide. The drug inhibits carbonic anhydrase isozymes CA I and CA II, with inhibition constants in the nanomolar range.
