Overview

N-acetyl-N'-beta-D-glucopyranosyl urea is a synthetic small molecule that acts as an inhibitor of glycogen phosphorylase (muscle form). It is structurally related to glucose and contains both an acetylated urea group and a beta-D-glucopyranoside moiety. The compound has been studied for its potential as an antidiabetic agent due to its ability to inhibit glycogen phosphorylase—a key enzyme in glycogen breakdown—thereby potentially reducing hepatic glucose output. Structural studies have shown it binds at the catalytic site of muscle glycogen phosphorylase b with minimal conformational change in the protein[1][5]. It remains experimental and has not advanced beyond preclinical or early investigational stages.
