Overview

This combination therapy consists of nebulized heparin, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), and albuterol administered in an alternating schedule for the treatment of inhalation injuries, particularly in burn patients. The mechanism involves multiple complementary actions: heparin inhibits fibrin clot formation in the airways and prevents obstructive cast formation, N-acetylcysteine provides mucolytic effects and antioxidant properties, while albuterol provides bronchodilation to counteract potential bronchospasm and improves mucociliary clearance. This combination has been shown to reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation, improve oxygenation, and potentially decrease mortality in patients with inhalation injuries.
