Overview

n-acetylcysteine + ascorbic acid is a combination of two antioxidant agents—N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a precursor to glutathione and direct free radical scavenger, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), an essential nutrient with antioxidant properties. This combination has been studied for its additive or synergistic effects in reducing oxidative stress, mutagenicity, and tissue injury in various clinical settings. Mechanistically, NAC replenishes intracellular glutathione stores and directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS), while ascorbic acid acts both as an antioxidant and under certain conditions may exhibit pro-oxidant activity. The combination has shown potential benefits in cancer chemoprevention[1], prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy[3][7], sepsis management[2], and other pharmacological interventions where oxidative stress plays a role.
