N-acetylcysteine + calcitriol is a combination of two active pharmaceutical ingredients. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine and acts primarily as an antioxidant and mucolytic agent. It increases intracellular glutathione, directly scavenges free radicals, and breaks disulfide bonds in mucus glycoproteins, reducing viscosity[1][3][5]. NAC is used clinically for acetaminophen overdose, chronic bronchopulmonary disorders, and as a dietary supplement for its antioxidant properties[1][2][5]. Calcitriol is the hormonally active form of vitamin D3 (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol), which regulates calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism by binding to the vitamin D receptor (VDR), modulating gene expression involved in calcium absorption and immune function. The combination may be investigated or used experimentally for synergistic neuroprotective or immunomodulatory effects; preclinical studies suggest that combining NAC with calcitriol can enhance functional recovery after hypoxic-ischemic injury via antioxidative and anti-inflammatory mechanisms[4].
