Overview

This is a combination of two drugs, n-acetylcysteine and ketamine. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is an antioxidant and precursor to glutathione, primarily used as a mucolytic agent and for the treatment of acetaminophen overdose. It has neuroprotective properties and modulates glutamate neurotransmission via the cystine-glutamate antiporter. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that acts as an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist; it is used for anesthesia, pain management, and increasingly in psychiatric indications such as depression due to its rapid-acting antidepressant effects. Preclinical studies indicate that co-administration of NAC with ketamine can prevent or ameliorate ketamine-induced toxicities—including cardiotoxicity, developmental toxicity, neurotoxicity affecting monoaminergic neurons—and behavioral deficits in animal models. The combination may be explored for reducing adverse effects associated with ketamine therapy or enhancing neuroprotection during its use[1][2][3].
