This therapeutic regimen consists of a combination of nab-paclitaxel and cisplatin administered through Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). Developed and investigated by the Mayo Clinic, it is specifically targeted at patients with pancreatic cancer that has metastasized to the peritoneum. Nab-paclitaxel is an albumin-bound nanoparticle formulation of paclitaxel that promotes microtubule assembly and prevents disassembly, thereby arresting the cell cycle. Cisplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent that forms inter- and intra-strand DNA cross-links, inhibiting DNA synthesis and inducing apoptosis. The HIPEC procedure involves the delivery of these agents in a heated solution directly into the abdominal cavity, which is intended to increase the local concentration of the drugs and enhance their cytotoxic effects against peritoneal tumor nodules.
