This combination therapy consists of nab-paclitaxel (Abraxane), an albumin-bound nanoparticle formulation of the taxane chemotherapy agent paclitaxel, and sargramostim (Leukine), a recombinant granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). Nab-paclitaxel works by stabilizing microtubules, thereby inhibiting cell division and inducing apoptosis. Sargramostim is an immunomodulator that stimulates the production and activation of macrophages and dendritic cells, potentially enhancing the anti-tumor immune response. This specific chemoimmunotherapy regimen was evaluated by the University of Washington in a Phase II trial for patients with platinum-resistant or refractory epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancer.
