Overview

This is a combination of two forms of supplemental iron used primarily for food fortification and the prevention or treatment of iron deficiency anemia. Sodium iron(III) ethylenediaminetetraacetate (NaFeEDTA) is a highly bioavailable chelated form of non-heme iron that enhances absorption, especially in diets high in phytates or other inhibitors. It works by releasing its bound iron in the gastrointestinal tract, where it is absorbed via normal physiological mechanisms; the EDTA component also helps protect dietary and fortificant non-heme iron from absorption inhibitors[1][2][3]. Electrolytic iron is a finely powdered elemental form produced by electrolysis; it has lower solubility and bioavailability than soluble salts like ferrous sulfate but can be used at higher concentrations to compensate for this[5]. The combination aims to provide both immediate (from NaFeEDTA) and sustained (from electrolytic iron) sources of absorbable dietary iron for populations at risk of deficiency.
