Overview

The combination of naloxone and ketamine represents two medications with distinct mechanisms of action used together in specific clinical contexts. Naloxone is an opioid receptor antagonist primarily used to reverse opioid overdoses by competitively binding to opioid receptors. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that primarily works by blocking NMDA receptors in the brain. This combination has been studied in research settings, particularly for treatment of depression in patients with comorbid alcohol use disorder. Research has shown mixed results regarding whether naloxone pretreatment affects ketamine's antidepressant properties.
