Overview

Naltrexone + fluoxetine is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Naltrexone is a pure opioid receptor antagonist that primarily blocks the mu opioid receptor in the central nervous system, thereby inhibiting the effects of endogenous and exogenous opioids. It is approved for use in alcohol dependence and opioid use disorder[5][6]. Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) commonly used to treat depression and other mood disorders. The combination has been studied experimentally for its potential to reduce alcohol intake by targeting multiple neurotransmitter systems—serotonergic (fluoxetine), dopaminergic, and opioidergic (naltrexone). Preclinical studies suggest that while each drug alone can reduce alcohol consumption in animal models, their combination at low doses may have an additive effect on reducing alcohol intake[2][3][8]. However, there is no evidence that this specific combination has been approved as a fixed-dose product or widely adopted clinically.
