Overview

Naltrexone + naltrexone extended-release is a combination of two formulations of the same active pharmaceutical ingredient, naltrexone. Naltrexone is an opioid receptor antagonist that works by binding to and blocking opioid receptors in the brain, thereby reducing cravings and preventing the euphoric and sedative effects of opioids and alcohol. The oral formulation is typically taken daily for alcohol use disorder (AUD), while the extended-release injectable formulation (XR-NTX) is administered intramuscularly once every four weeks for both AUD and opioid use disorder (OUD). Both forms are non-addictive, do not cause withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation, and have no abuse potential. Extended-release formulations provide more consistent plasma levels compared to oral dosing[1][2][3][7]. The primary indications are AUD and OUD.
