Naltrexone + oxytocin is an investigational combination therapy consisting of naltrexone, an opioid receptor antagonist, and oxytocin, a neuropeptide hormone. This combination is being studied primarily for the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Naltrexone reduces alcohol craving and relapse risk by blocking opioid receptors involved in reward pathways. Oxytocin has shown beneficial effects on reducing alcohol craving and stress reactivity in preliminary studies. The rationale for combining these agents is based on evidence that they may have synergistic effects—oxytocin can enhance the efficacy of naltrexone by targeting additional neurotransmitter systems implicated in addiction, potentially leading to greater reductions in alcohol craving and consumption than either drug alone. Clinical trials are ongoing to assess safety and efficacy; preclinical studies also suggest this combination may be more effective than monotherapy[1][2][3][5].
