Naltrexone + paroxetine is a combination of two approved pharmaceutical drugs, naltrexone and paroxetine. Naltrexone is an opioid receptor antagonist primarily used to treat opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder by blocking the euphoric and sedative effects of opioids and reducing cravings[6][7]. Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used for major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, vasomotor symptoms of menopause, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder[3]. The combination has been studied in clinical settings for augmentation in treatment-refractory depression[2] as well as for compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD)[9]. The rationale behind this combination lies in targeting both serotonergic pathways (via paroxetine) and the endogenous opioid system (via naltrexone), potentially providing synergistic effects in certain psychiatric or behavioral conditions. However, there are potential risks such as increased risk of serotonin syndrome when these drugs are combined[3], so their concomitant use should be closely monitored.
