Nano hydroxyapatite reinforced glass ionomer is an experimental dental restorative material developed by incorporating nano-sized hydroxyapatite (nHAp) particles into a conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC) matrix. Hydroxyapatite is a biocompatible material chemically and structurally similar to human tooth enamel and dentin. The addition of these nanoparticles is intended to enhance the mechanical properties of the cement, such as compressive and tensile strength, while improving its bioactivity. Mechanistically, the material promotes the remineralization of the tooth structure by releasing calcium and phosphate ions, which helps to integrate the restoration with the natural dentin and enamel. It is primarily being evaluated for the treatment of root caries, particularly in geriatric patients, where its superior marginal seal and ion-releasing properties offer advantages over traditional restorative materials.
