Overview
Naphthoquine + artesunate is a fixed-dose combination antimalarial drug composed of two active ingredients: naphthoquine and artesunate. Naphthoquine is a synthetic 4-aminoquinoline antimalarial that acts as a blood schizonticide, while artesunate is an artemisinin derivative with rapid parasite clearance activity. The combination targets Plasmodium species responsible for malaria, providing both rapid reduction of parasitemia (via artesunate) and prevention of recrudescence (via naphthoquine). This dual mechanism helps reduce the risk of resistance development and improves treatment efficacy for uncomplicated malaria. The product was developed by the Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology, Academy of Military Medical Sciences in China[1][8]. It has been approved in China for the treatment of malaria.
