Overview
Naproxen + omeprazole is an oral fixed-dose combination of two drugs. Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2, thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins involved in pain, inflammation, and fever. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system in gastric parietal cells. This combination is used to treat conditions requiring long-term NSAID therapy—such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis—in patients at increased risk for gastrointestinal ulcers or complications due to NSAID use. The PPI component helps protect against NSAID-induced gastric mucosal injury[8][2][4].
