Overview

**narasin + nicarbazin** is a fixed-ratio combination drug used primarily in poultry as a feed additive for the prevention of coccidiosis, a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract caused by various *Eimeria* species. This combination contains two active ingredients: - **Narasin:** An ionophore polyether antibiotic produced by fermentation of *Streptomyces aureofaciens*. Narasin disrupts ion gradients in coccidia parasites, interfering with nutrient transport and cell function. - **Nicarbazin:** A chemical anticoccidial agent recognized as an equimolecular complex of 4,4'-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC) and 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethyl-pyrimidine (HDP). Nicarbazin disrupts the development of coccidia by interfering with energy metabolism and nuclear division. Maxiban (narasin + nicarbazin) acts through a **dual mode of action**: narasin targets the sporozoite stage while nicarbazin mainly impacts merogony, resulting in synergistic activity and reduced resistance compared to single-agent anticoccidials. It is administered orally via feed at concentrations of 40–50 mg/kg for each component and is approved for use in broiler chickens, but not in laying hens, turkeys, or breeding stock. Clinical studies indicate efficacy against multiple *Eimeria* strains, with benefits including prevention of coccidiosis, improved weight gain, feed efficiency, and protection of intestinal integrity.
