Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Natto + red yeast rice is a combination dietary supplement containing nattokinase (an enzyme derived from the fermentation of soybeans by Bacillus subtilis in the traditional Japanese food natto) and red yeast rice (a product of fermenting white rice with Monascus purpureus). This combination is designed to support cardiovascular health by targeting both blood lipid levels and circulatory function. Nattokinase acts as a fibrinolytic enzyme that promotes the breakdown of fibrin, potentially reducing blood clot formation. Red yeast rice contains monacolins (notably monacolin K), which inhibit HMG-CoA reductase—the same target as statin drugs—thereby lowering cholesterol synthesis in the liver. Clinical studies have shown that this combination can significantly reduce triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and improve HDL cholesterol more effectively than either component alone in patients with hyperlipidemia or coronary artery disease[1][4][6]. The supplement is typically used for managing elevated blood lipids and supporting overall cardiovascular health.
