Overview

This drug is a fixed-dose **combination of three antiretroviral medications**—**nelfinavir**, **abacavir**, and **lamivudine**—used for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. - **Nelfinavir** acts as a competitive inhibitor of HIV-1 protease, preventing viral protein processing and thus leading to the formation of immature, noninfectious viral particles. - **Abacavir** is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that is converted intracellularly to carbovir triphosphate, an analogue of deoxyguanosine-5’-triphosphate, which inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and causes DNA chain termination. - **Lamivudine** is also an NRTI, phosphorylated intracellularly to lamivudine triphosphate, which inhibits reverse transcriptase via chain termination upon incorporation into viral DNA. This triple-drug combination forms the core of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) and is intended to reduce morbidity and mortality related to HIV infection by suppressing viral replication, but does not cure HIV[2][3][4].
