Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neomycin + polymyxin B + hydrocortisone is a **combination pharmaceutical product** containing two antibiotics (neomycin, a topical aminoglycoside, and polymyxin B, a topical polypeptide) plus hydrocortisone, a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid. This combination is used to treat bacterial infections and reduce associated inflammation, redness, itching, and swelling. Mechanistically, neomycin inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria, polymyxin B disrupts bacterial cell membranes, and hydrocortisone modulates gene transcription to reduce inflammatory mediators. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of skin infections, outer ear infections (otitis externa), and ocular infections, depending on the formulation. Uses are prescription-only and should not be applied to large surface areas or to deep or puncture wounds.
