Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neomycin sulfate + bacitracin zinc + hydrocortisone + polymyxin b sulfate is a marketed fixed-dose **ophthalmic ointment** that combines three topical antibiotics with a corticosteroid for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions in which bacterial infection is present or the risk of infection is high. The antimicrobial components act by complementary antibacterial mechanisms: neomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis at the 30S ribosomal subunit, bacitracin interferes with bacterial cell-wall synthesis, and polymyxin B disrupts the outer membrane of susceptible gram-negative bacteria. Hydrocortisone is a glucocorticoid receptor agonist that suppresses ocular inflammation, edema, and immune signaling. The product is used for inflammatory conditions of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the globe, including chronic anterior uveitis, infective conjunctivitis, and corneal injury from chemical, radiation, or thermal burns or foreign-body penetration. It is primarily marketed as a generic ophthalmic combination product rather than as a single dominant branded asset.
