Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neomycin sulfate + bacitracin zinc + hydrocortisone acetate + polymyxin b is a fixed-dose **ophthalmic ointment** combining three antibacterial agents with a corticosteroid anti-inflammatory. The antibiotics provide broad topical ocular coverage through inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis and disruption of bacterial cell-envelope function, while hydrocortisone acetate activates the glucocorticoid receptor to suppress inflammatory responses. It has been marketed as **Neo-Polycin HC** and has also appeared in closely related branded ophthalmic forms under the **Cortisporin** name. The combination is indicated for **steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions** when bacterial infection is present or there is a risk of infection, including inflammatory conditions of the conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the globe, chronic anterior uveitis, infective conjunctivitis, and corneal injury from chemical, radiation, or thermal burns or foreign-body penetration. Typical ophthalmic ointment composition is neomycin sulfate equivalent to 3.5 mg neomycin base, polymyxin B sulfate 10,000 units, bacitracin zinc 400 units, and hydrocortisone acetate 10 mg per gram in a petrolatum/mineral oil base.
