Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Neomycin sulfate + polymyxin B sulfate + bacitracin zinc + hydrocortisone acetate is a sterile, prescription **ophthalmic fixed-dose combination ointment** containing an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid and three antibacterial agents. Hydrocortisone acetate activates the glucocorticoid receptor to suppress ocular inflammation; neomycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis through 16S ribosomal RNA binding; polymyxin B disrupts susceptible Gram-negative bacterial outer membranes by binding lipopolysaccharide lipid A; and bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis by targeting undecaprenyl pyrophosphate. The product is indicated for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions when bacterial infection is present or poses a risk, including inflammatory disorders of the conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment, chronic anterior uveitis, and corneal injury caused by chemical, radiation, or thermal burns or foreign bodies. The labeled formulation contains neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B sulfate, bacitracin zinc, and hydrocortisone acetate in an ophthalmic ointment base.
