Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Glycostigmin is a fixed-dose combination of neostigmine methylsulfate and glycopyrronium bromide, developed by Pirkanmaan hyvinvointialue (Tampere University Hospital) for use in anesthesia. Neostigmine is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that reverses the effects of non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents by increasing the concentration of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction. Glycopyrronium bromide is a muscarinic antagonist included to prevent the cholinergic side effects of neostigmine, such as bradycardia and hypersalivation, by blocking muscarinic receptors in the heart and exocrine glands. This combination is typically administered intravenously at the end of surgery to restore muscle function while maintaining hemodynamic stability.
