Overview

This is an investigational combination therapy consisting of nepafenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and sodium carboxymethylcellulose, an ocular lubricant. Developed by the Instituto de Oftalmología Fundación Conde de Valenciana in Mexico, the combination is being evaluated for the treatment of epiphora (excessive tearing) resulting from lacrimal punctum stenosis (narrowing of the tear duct opening). Nepafenac acts as a prodrug that is converted into amfenac, which inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, thereby reducing inflammation that may contribute to punctal narrowing. The lubricant component, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, helps stabilize the tear film and reduce ocular surface irritation, which is often associated with chronic tearing and ductal stenosis.
