Overview
Nepeta menthoides Boiss. & Buhse, commonly referred to as Persian lavender or Ustukhuddus, is a medicinal herb from the Lamiaceae family native to Iran. A freeze-dried aqueous extract of the plant is being investigated by Shiraz University of Medical Sciences for its anxiolytic and antidepressant properties. In clinical trials involving adult outpatients with depression and comorbid anxiety, the extract (administered at 400 mg twice daily) demonstrated a significant reduction in Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) scores compared to sertraline, while also exhibiting a lower recurrence rate and a more favorable safety profile. The therapeutic effects are attributed to its rich content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, which are thought to provide neuroprotective and mood-stabilizing benefits.
