Drug intelligence / Profile preview
nerve growth factor + chitosan is an investigational combination therapy consisting of nerve growth factor (NGF) encapsulated within a chitosan-based hydrogel. Developed by researchers at Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, this formulation is specifically designed for the treatment of traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) associated with optic canal fractures. The chitosan gel serves as a biocompatible and biodegradable scaffold that allows for the sustained release of NGF directly to the injured optic nerve. NGF acts as a neurotrophic factor, binding to TrkA and p75NTR receptors to promote the survival of retinal ganglion cells and stimulate axonal regeneration. The therapy is administered via surgical implantation into the optic nerve sheath, aiming to restore visual function in patients with severe vision loss.
