This experimental combination therapy is being developed by the Navy General Hospital in Beijing for the treatment of moderate to severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in newborns. The treatment regimen involves the transplantation of allogenic neural progenitor cells (NPCs), derived from human fetal forebrain tissue, alongside the administration of concentrated paracrine factors obtained from cultured human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The NPCs are intended to integrate into the damaged brain tissue to promote neural regeneration and provide trophic support, while the MSC-derived paracrine factors are delivered via intrathecal injection to provide neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory signals. This dual approach aims to mitigate the brain damage associated with HIE and improve long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes, including motor and cognitive functions. The therapy is currently being evaluated in a randomized clinical trial (NCT02854579).
