Neuropeptide Y (1-36) is a 36-amino acid endogenous peptide that serves as a potent neurotransmitter and hormone within the central and peripheral nervous systems. It belongs to the pancreatic polypeptide family and is known for its wide-ranging biological roles, including the regulation of energy balance, memory, and neuroprotection. In the context of retinal and ocular health, NPY (1-36) exhibits neuroprotective properties but is also characterized by its ability to induce transient vasoconstriction, primarily through the activation of the Neuropeptide Y receptor type 1 (Y1). It acts as a non-selective agonist for several NPY receptor subtypes, including Y1, Y2, Y4, and Y5. While its therapeutic potential for neurodegenerative diseases like glaucoma is recognized, its clinical application is often limited by its vascular side effects compared to truncated analogs like NPY (3-36).
