Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NEX-22 is a once-monthly, long-acting injectable formulation of the GLP-1 receptor agonist liraglutide, developed by Nanexa AB for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It utilizes Nanexa's proprietary PharmaShell® technology, which employs atomic layer deposition (ALD) to create a thin, inorganic coating around drug particles, enabling a controlled-release depot. This formulation is designed to improve patient adherence and reduce treatment discontinuation by extending the dosing interval from daily (as required by standard liraglutide products like Victoza) to once monthly. In Phase I clinical trials, NEX-22 demonstrated a sustained release profile over 36 days with dose linearity and a favorable safety profile, notably showing fewer gastrointestinal side effects compared to immediate-release GLP-1 agonists.
