Overview
A combination therapy consisting of oral niacin (nicotinic acid) and topical prednisolone acetate eye drops, developed by the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. It is used to treat various forms of retinal vein occlusion, including central (CRVO), hemi-retinal (HRVO), and branch (BRVO) types. Niacin serves as a vasodilator, promoting the formation of collateral vessels to bypass venous obstructions by stimulating prostaglandin-mediated nitric oxide release. Prednisolone acetate, a corticosteroid, is used to manage associated macular edema and vascular leakage. This approach was investigated as a non-invasive alternative to repeated intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide injections.
