Overview

nicardipine + esmolol is a pharmacological combination consisting of a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker and a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist. Nicardipine induces vasodilation by inhibiting calcium ion influx into vascular smooth muscle, thereby reducing peripheral resistance and increasing coronary blood flow. Esmolol is an ultra-short-acting beta-blocker that decreases heart rate and myocardial contractility, reducing myocardial oxygen consumption. This combination is being studied by Nanjing Medical University to evaluate its impact on endothelial shear stress and blood velocity in patients with acute coronary syndrome and coronary artery disease, aiming to optimize cardioprotective effects during the cardiac cycle. The study specifically examines the redistribution of shear stress following trans-coronary or intravenous administration of these agents.
