Overview

A topical combination of nifedipine (0.3%) and lidocaine (1.5%) developed by the University of Calgary for the treatment of chronic anal fissure. Nifedipine, a calcium channel blocker, works by reducing internal anal sphincter hypertonia, thereby improving local blood flow and facilitating the healing of the fissure. Lidocaine acts as a local anesthetic to provide immediate pain relief by blocking sodium channels in nerve fibers. This combination is being studied in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial as a non-invasive alternative to surgical interventions like lateral internal sphincterotomy.
