Overview

A combination therapy consisting of nifedipine, a calcium channel blocker, and sodium cromoglycate, a mast cell stabilizer. In a study of patients with bronchial asthma, this combination showed enhanced protection against airway response to inhaled hypertonic saline compared to either drug alone. Nifedipine works by blocking calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle and myocardial cells, while sodium cromoglycate inhibits degranulation of mast cells, preventing the release of inflammatory mediators. The combination might be beneficial in the treatment of difficult asthmatic patients.
