Nimotuzumab + immune checkpoint inhibitors is a combination therapy regimen being evaluated for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nimotuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), blocking its interaction with ligands and inhibiting downstream signaling pathways that promote tumor cell proliferation and survival. This is combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), a class of drugs (such as PD-1 or PD-L1 inhibitors) that release the "brakes" on the immune system, allowing T cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells. The combination is specifically being studied by Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital in a Phase II trial for patients who have failed prior first-line immunotherapy, aiming to overcome resistance to single-agent checkpoint blockade.
