Nitargal is an oral small molecule cardiovascular agent developed by the Research Institute for Physical Chemical Problems of the Belarusian State University. It is a complex compound consisting of L-arginine and a nitrate group, designed to act as a multi-faceted nitric oxide (NO) donor. Nitargal exerts vasodilator, cardiotropic, and antiaggregant effects by providing L-arginine as a substrate for nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and directly releasing NO from its nitrate moiety. This dual action increases the concentration of NO in the vascular endothelium, which activates soluble guanylate cyclase, leading to increased cyclic GMP levels and smooth muscle relaxation. Clinically, it is approved in Belarus for the treatment of stable angina pectoris, where it improves coronary circulation, reduces myocardial oxygen demand, and prevents platelet thrombus formation.
