Nitric oxide + oxygen refers to the therapeutic administration of inhaled nitric oxide gas, typically delivered in combination with oxygen via a ventilator or breathing circuit. Nitric oxide acts as a selective pulmonary vasodilator by relaxing smooth muscle cells in the pulmonary vasculature, leading to improved blood flow and oxygenation in ventilated areas of the lung. This therapy is primarily used for treating hypoxic respiratory failure and persistent pulmonary hypertension in term and near-term neonates, but it is also used off-label for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and other forms of pulmonary hypertension in adults and children. The mechanism involves rapid binding of inhaled nitric oxide to oxyhemoglobin, which limits its effects to well-ventilated lung regions[1][2][3][4][5][8]. Inhaled nitric oxide may also have anti-inflammatory properties and can reduce afterload on the heart[6].
